With children accounting for 18% of new COVID-19 cases, Texas Democrats hail Biden’s measures to protect children and nursing home residents
AUSTIN, Texas – It has been more than three weeks since Gov. Greg Abbott doubled down on his executive order banning schools and local authorities from taking action to keep Texans safe, and since then the situation has grown increasingly serious. COVID-19 levels in Texas schools are significantly higher than a year ago, children account for 18% of new COVID-19 cases, and the governor himself has contracted COVID-19 – yet Abbott continues to refuse to rescind the order and allow major COVID safety protocols to schools in Texas.
However, as our failing and failing governor lets Texas children die once again, Texas Democrats welcome President Biden’s leadership to fight Abbott’s irresponsible and dangerous policies. As the Delta variant wreaks havoc on communities across the country, President Biden announced earlier this week that he would impose a COVID-19 vaccine mandate, starting next month, on all nursing home staff in order to that institutions continue to receive Medicare and Medicaid funding. The president also recently demanded that all federal employees get vaccinated against COVID-19 and publicly encouraged and celebrated companies and entities that have done the same.
A majority of Americans – 64 percent – approve vaccine mandates to bring the coronavirus under control, although Republicans largely oppose such measures to improve public health and safety. Texas Democrats applaud President Biden’s news, as well as his announcement of potential legal interventions in situations where heads of state – like Governor Greg Abbott – put children at risk.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa made the following statement:
“We commend President Biden for showing genuine leadership and strength in protecting the lives of every American, especially the most vulnerable among us, our children and our seniors. The President is following proven, scientifically-backed methods to curb the spread of this virus and get America back on track for the long term. But to push back this pandemic and help our communities recover after an incredibly difficult year and a half, we need everyone to do their part.
“In the face of Greg Abbott’s insistence on politics with our lives, local leaders across Texas have taken important steps to keep our communities safe. I applaud their efforts and continue to call on Republican leaders to join Democrats in encouraging everyone to take this virus seriously and get vaccinated. As the President has always said, we are all in the same boat and we have to get out of it together. “
