Throwback Thursday: Defendant Ken Paxton withholds ERCOT tapes in new attempt to hide truth from Texans
AUSTIN, Texas – Earlier this week, indicted Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced he was refusing to release recordings of ERCOT communications during the February winter storm – including emails, texts and call tapes telephone calls between officials.
Texas is already reeling from news last month that the actual death toll from the storm is nearly four times the previous official number, with more than 700 lives lost in the crisis. These deaths were preventable. However, instead of doing their job and keeping Texans safe, Republican officials – including failed Gov. Greg Abbott and Paxton himself – watched, did nothing, and let the Texans die. Now, Paxton is preventing Texans from finding out exactly what happened that led to this disaster – and exactly how the decisions that caused the disaster were made. It is a cover-up.
However, this despicable decision is far from the first of its kind, from an attorney general who essentially wrote the book about cover-ups, deceptive practices, withholding information, and juggling between being an elected official and being. indicted for fraud. For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we would like to remind reporters that the dangerous and dishonored Ken Paxton:
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa made the following statement:
“Texas Republicans like Greg Abbott and Ken Paxton did nothing to protect us from the winter storm in February, and because of their failures more than 700 people have died. Now Paxton is withholding tapes of conversations between ERCOT officials during the storm.
“Paxton is trying to hide the truth from Texans, but we already know that the responsibility for this disaster lies with Republicans in Texas. Abbott and Paxton had a full week’s warning to prepare for this storm and save lives. Instead, they did nothing. Texas Republican politicians don’t care about Texans. They made this clear when they abandoned us during the winter storm, and even more so when they squandered the entire spring legislative session without fixing the grid. Texas deserves leaders, but as long as Republicans are in power, we will be forced to fend for ourselves. Democrats are organizing in every corner of the state to defeat Abbott and Paxton in 2022, and finally deliver the strong leadership Texans deserve.
