Texas Republicans filed for 2020 forensic audit as Democrats fled the state
Republicans at Texas House introduced a bill for a forensic audit of the 2020 election results in the large counties that were largely elected for President Joe Biden on the same day Democratic lawmakers fled the state.
The legislation, tabled last week by State Representative Steve Toth, could cause Texas to follow the lead of the Arizona GOP-led Senate by conducting a partisan inspection of election machinery and equipment that sparked criticism from Democrats and state officials who say there is no evidence to support President Donald Trump’s former widespread fraud claims.
The audit would target counties with populations over 415,000 and call on the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House to appoint an “independent third party” to conduct the review between November 1, 2021 and February 1, 2022.
A report is due to Texas officials by March 1, 2022, “detailing any discrepancies or discrepancies in voter data, ballot data or tabulation,” according to the bill.

The legislation, co-authored by more than a dozen Republicans, was introduced on July 12, the same day many House Democrats fled the state to break the quorum so the chamber could not vote on them. bills they oppose or any other legislation during a special session, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
State Representative Chris Turner, Chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, said the audit legislation appears “all based on the lie that there is widespread electoral fraud and that Donald Trump has truly won the day. elections, ”according to the Dallas Morning News.

Trump won the state of Texas and his 38 electoral votes with about 52% of the vote, beating Biden even though the Democrat performed better in cities and suburbs than Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Ten of the 13 counties that would be covered by the Texas audit, including Dallas and Tarrant counties, were won by Biden, including those that cover Austin, Houston and San Antonio.
“We need a forensic audit to uncover all the election fraud,” Toth said in an online article Monday. He said the bill, called the Texas Voter Confidence Act, was the product of meetings with voters and “a direct request from voters who sent me to Austin.”
