Texas Republican Party Chairman resigns – to challenge gubernatorial post?
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Allen West resigned his post as Chairman of the Texas Republican Party on Friday morning. The Republican Party has said West’s resignation will not take effect until a new president is selected on July 11.
At a press conference on Friday morning, West said he was considering running for office, but he danced around which office.
“Maybe something from Congress,” West said. Some far-right members of the Republican Party have encouraged West to challenge Governor Greg Abbott.
West said on Friday he was disappointed Texas lawmakers failed to pass the election and pass the bills this session.
“It was the # 1 priority for the Texas Republican Party, the # 1 priority for the governor, it should have been something that was done,” he said.
He praised lawmakers for passing a restrictive abortion bill and legislation that allows people to carry handguns without a license.
Could West challenge Governor Greg Abbott?
The question everyone will want to know now is whether West will try to oust incumbent Republican Party Gov. Governor Greg Abbott. West has often been a thorn in Abbott’s side since West became president in July 2020.
Although Abbott got approval from former President Donald Trump earlier this week, many of those close to the former president have encouraged West to run.
Texas Monthly Reports at a QAnon-affiliated event on Sunday – two days before Trump’s approval – former national security adviser Michael Flynn endorsed West as governor.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller also attended the event, according to the Texas Tribune, and said Abbott would not win re-election and the GOP needed a top challenger.
“Here’s what’s bothering me right now – our current governor, who did a really good job when he was first elected, cannot be re-elected in the general election,” Miller said of Abbott. .
He added that Abbott would not get support from the business community due to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“He won’t get their vote. So there’s a good chance Beto O’Rourke or Matthew McConaughey will be the next governor of Texas, so we need to find someone who can win.
Miller and West both attended the “Open Texas Rally” on October 10, 2020 outside the Governor’s Mansion to protest Abbott’s decrees as bossy and illegal.
West also sued Abbott in September when Abbott extended early voting by six days to help people vote safely during the pandemic. West suggested without evidence that it would invite fraud.
West has been in office before, but it was in Florida. He won a two-year term in 2010 as a member of the United States Congress representing the 22nd District of Florida in the Fort Lauderdale area. He was defeated in 2013 for re-election.
Some Republican Party members criticize Allen West
Travis County Republican Party Chairman Matt Mackowiak, who has successfully led a voting initiative in Austin to reinstate the city’s camping ban, sharply criticized West on Friday morning.
“It is now clear that Allen West’s entire tenure as president of the Texas GOP was intended to do only what many suspected: provide him with a platform for his political future, not an opportunity to build the party,” Mackowiak said.
“For over 7 months, our state president has been recklessly attacking our officials across the state, rallying with Alex Jones at the governor’s mansion, attacking our new president and doing the rhetorical work of the Democrats in Texas,” he said. he continued.
