Texas Democrats join state and national leaders on “Texas Drive for Democracy” ahead of “For the People” rally in Austin on Sunday
AUSTIN, Texas – Last week, the Texas Democratic Party joined Powered by People and Beto O’Rourke for the “Texas Drive for Democracy” to discuss how voter suppression bills like Senate Bill 7 the state would undermine the ability of Texans to participate in democracy and the importance of new legislation that protects voting rights in Texas and across the country.
The Texas Democratic Party also unveiled an ambitious voter registration plan, aptly named Texas Project, last week, in which the party hopes to contact 2 million unregistered Democratic, possibly Democratic, voters across the state. The majority of unregistered Texas voters are extremely diverse, as is the young and rapidly growing population of Texas.
The last stop on Texas Drive for Democracy will be this Sunday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m. on the South Steps of the State Capitol. The public and Democratic leaders will come together for the People’s Rally to demand that our right to vote remain protected as a cornerstone of our democracy.
“Texans should know that Republican state officials are working to make it more difficult to vote before the next election,” said Luke Warford, director of strategy for the Texas Democratic Party. “Republicans know the only way to win is to make it harder for Texans to get out and vote. It is essential that Texans understand the gravity of this moment and know that they have the power to make Texas a more equitable place to live, work and raise a family. That is why we need to register voters everywhere. Not just in big cities like Dallas and Houston, but also in Midland, Lubbock and Abilene. We joined the Texas Drive for Democracy to tell Democrats in these communities that we cannot win without your help! “

This leg of the tour will culminate on Sunday, June 20 in Austin as Democrats across the state participate in the “Rally for the People” at the State Capitol. Partnering with state and national suffrage groups and leaders, event attendees will come together for the federal government to pass the For the People Act, a new federal voting rights bill which would further protect the right to vote across the country while increasing voter access and limiting partisan gerrymandering and voter suppression efforts.
“We call on everyone to join Texas Democrats, Beto O’Rourke, state and national leaders, and everyday Texans at the For the People rally this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on the South Steps of the State Capitol as we claim our right to participate. in our democracy, our right to vote and our right to shape the future of our great state ”, Warford added.
