Statement by Texas Democrats on Cornyn and Cruz blocking investigation into January 6 insurgency
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement on how Republican Senators from Texas John Cornyn and Ted Cruz voted to block a commission of inquiry into the January 6 insurgency:
“The Republican Party is a threat to the United States of America and our democracy. Alongside nearly all Republicans in the Senate, Traitorous Republican Senators from Texas John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have just voted to block a commission of inquiry into the events of January 6, 2021. The January 6 insurgency was an attack national terrorist who claimed the lives of a police officer and four others while endangering the lives of thousands – yet Republicans are blocking efforts to investigate. It’s beyond shame – it’s a deliberate attempt to rewrite history and dodge responsibility.
“The peaceful transfer of power is at the heart of what makes our country strong. The American people deserve to know exactly what happened when an armed insurgency threatened to overturn the results of a free and fair election. Instead, Republicans are trying to cover it up. There is a reason for this: because by inciting the insurrection, by actively participating in it, countless elected Republicans are accomplices.
“Republicans are mounting a full-fledged assault on American democracy as we know it – and with it, the heart of who we are as a country. They spent six months denying the results of an election, trying to rob us of our right to vote in state legislatures across the country, and many of them, including Ted Cruz, Texas, actively encouraged the insurgency in our country. Capitol in January. These Republican politicians are a threat to our democracy, and that means they are a threat to our freedom, our rights, and our ability to determine our own future – everything we stand for as a country. Now is the time to stand up for our democracy by holding every Republican who voted against this commission accountable. “
