Rooney Confident Stretton Will Benefit From Stockport Loan – Blog
Wayne Rooney is confident young forward Jack Stretton will benefit from his loan spell with the Stockport County National League.
The 19-year-old joined the Hatters on a month-long loan on Monday and the Scotland youth international could make his debut for his new side against Solihull Moors on Tuesday night.
Derby’s Academy graduate Stretton made his senior debut earlier this season and has three first-team appearances to his name – all under Rooney.
A groin problem has limited his involvement with the first team in recent months, but after coming back to full force last month, Rooney believes competitive games are the next big step for the forward.
“Jack will be at Stockport next month and I think it will be a good decision for him,” Rooney said RamsTV.
“It’s a chance for him to go play competitive football and I can’t wait to see him play. I’m sure if he gets the chance he will score goals. It’s a good move and it helps us to see him gain playing time at a really competitive level.
“Stockport showed interest in Jack and I felt it was a good time for Jack to go out and get some games.
“He can get some U23 games and be a first team here, but I think I felt, and he felt, that it would be good for him to come out and spend a few minutes on the land in a competitive environment. . I am sure it will be of great benefit to him.
Stretton’s Under-23 form earlier in the campaign, scoring eight times in the Premier League 2 – Division 1, saw him join the first team and make his professional home debut against Wycombe Wanderers in November.
