ICYMI: Abortion Attacks Drop Texas GOP Approval Ratings
AUSTIN, Texas – Another day another attack on Texas GOP abortion rights. The all-Republican Texas Supreme Court on Monday refused to resume proceedings in a lawsuit for Planned Parenthood challenging SB 8 – delaying one of many legal challenges filed against the Texas Republicans’ ban on illegal abortion. Because the United States Supreme Court has also refused to take action and block the ban before it takes effect, SB 8 has been in effect in Texas for over a month now – and as Texans await the results of a series of legal challenges to the ban, SB 8 continues to hurt people across the state.
However, the deeply unpopular attacks are also weighing on the approval ratings of the GOP. Failure, Governor Greg Abbott saw a lower in its approval ratings at the beginning of September and a month later, these lows were maintained. A recent Quinnipiac survey put Abbott’s approval rating at just 44% – and his handling of abortion received the lowest approval of any issue, with notably only 32% of independents approving of Abbott’s handling of abortion issues .
These results should come as no surprise, because a clear and strong majority of Americans oppose the overthrow Roe vs. Wade – and as a recent NPR poll showed, nearly six in ten Americans oppose the central provisions of SB 8. in the fight to defend access to abortion. As we await a federal decision in the Justice Department’s attempt to block this ban, Democrats in Texas continue to stand with Texans and abortion advocates, and will continue to fight to protect our communities, our health care and our constitutional rights.
Texas Democratic Party co-executive director Hannah Roe Beck made the following statement:
“It’s been over a month since the Texas Republicans’ illegal abortion ban went into effect – bringing our state closer to a GOP-led dystopia and putting the health and well-being of millions of Texans into effect. in danger. But this attack is meeting resistance on all fronts. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone in Texas and across the country who came together in a women’s march this weekend – and I know our voices will continue to speak, as we refuse to let this hateful ban let go. to maintain.
“A clear overwhelming majority of Americans want Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land. And a clear, strong majority of Americans believe the Texas Republicans’ ban on abortion is wrong. It’s no wonder Greg Abbott’s approval ratings have plummeted – because Texans are fed up with our governor taking a hatchet for our rights and freedoms. Texas Democrats will continue to fight alongside defenders to end this shameful ban, and we will continue to work every day to defeat Greg Abbott next November. Because Texas deserves better.
