Democrats will lose majority if they do not pass the franchise bill – Mother Jones
Beto O’Rourke said Mother Jones He was strongly considering running for governor of Texas on Wednesday, largely to protect the franchise.
“When I thought about how I could be most effective for this state, and hopefully this country this year, it was on the question of the right to vote,” he said. during a live virtual conversation. “It is tied to any other right that matters to you. ”
.@BetoORourke has just confirmed that he is considering running for governor and that it has everything to do with voting rights. “When I thought about how I could be most effective for this state, and hopefully this country this year, it was on the question of voting rights.” pic.twitter.com/vC2cVG8YKZ

But he stressed that suppressing GOP voters and extreme gerrymandering could only be truly fought if Congress passed federal legislation protecting voting rights.
“We need major federal voting rights legislation that can disrupt the system and allow free and fair elections in Texas and those other states that are besieged by these anti-‘small’ democratic forces,” a- he declared.
He praised the recently introduced Freedom to Vote Act, a compromise bill introduced by Democratic senators including Joe Manchin (DW.Va.) that would expand access to the ballot, ban partisan gerrymandering and suppress black money. But he warned Democrats would lose their majority in Congress if they failed to reform filibuster to overcome and pass GOP opposition.
“Competitive elections allow more voters, and therefore more likely Democratic voters, to ultimately participate in decisions,” said O’Rourke. “And if we, as Democrats or pro-democracy Americans, are not prepared to use all the tools at our disposal, then the Republicans are using all the tools at their disposal to restrict and reduce and perhaps completely demolish the right to vote, so we become complicit in the result, and I am not for that one.
He noted that communities of color in states like Texas and Georgia were the most ardent supporters of Joe Biden and the most likely to be targeted by voter suppression efforts. “If when the fight was on the Democrats walked away or stood on the process instead of winning the damn thing… we will lose. And frankly, it would be hard to argue that we didn’t deserve to lose if we don’t manage to fight now and win this fight now. “
“If we stick to the principle of filibuster and deny ourselves the ability to fight back effectively and save this democracy, I really fear we will lose it forever. –@BetoORourke pic.twitter.com/uguiSQuqF5

He predicted that if Republicans regained control of one or both houses of Congress, they would initiate impeachment proceedings against Biden and attempt to overturn the 2024 election results.
“If we stick to the principle of filibuster and deny ourselves the ability to fight effectively and save this democracy, I really fear that we will lose it forever,” he said.
