Democratic race to replace Eddie Bernice Johnson in Congress heats up – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
With only five days to go until the second round of the primary election, the race for the US House District is getting increasingly heated. It’s the seat U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Dallas) has held for 30 years, and she’s retiring.
“We haven’t had such a deceptive and situated campaign in District 30 since its inception,” Congresswoman Johnson said at a press conference on Thursday.
Johnson, who has endorsed state Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Dallas,) joined clergy to show their support. This group says that Crockett’s opponent, Jane Hope Hamilton, misrepresented Crockett’s record. They are particularly concerned about claims that Crockett jumped on a ballot bill, joining other Democrats who left Austin and traveled to DC in protest. Some Democrats returned to vote on the bill.
“Jasmine Crockett, she joined the Democrats who broke quorum to go to Washington DC. She was also one of the longest standing Democrats,” said Pastor Frederick Haynes of Friendship-West Baptist Church .
Hamilton hit back, saying those who returned fought to improve the bill.
“The overwhelming majority of Democrats were there on the House floor to make sure their constituents and constituents were heard in one of the biggest negotiations and fights we’ve seen in Texas history as we speak. voter suppression,” said Jane Hope Hamilton.
Crockett did not attend Thursday’s press conference. But during a recent appearance on NBC 5’s Lone Star Politics, she spoke passionately about the campaign.
“Unfortunately my opponent does not want to run regardless of his qualifications for this seat. I am focusing on the matter,” Crockett said earlier this month.
Hamilton says Crockett inflated his record and wasn’t honest during the campaign.
“She chose to say no to public hearings,” Hamilton said.
She adds that Crockett avoided opportunities to discuss the issues face to face.
“Jasmine Crockett had multiple occasions and opportunities to sit with me on a stage, in a press room and discuss facts, and she denied every single one of them,” Hamilton said.
There were debates and forums in the primaries, but none in the second round.
Early voting for this race runs until Friday, with the second round taking place on Tuesday.
On the Republican side, James Harris and James Rogers are in the second round.
