Beverly Powell of Texas must fight GOP gerrymandering
Texas Democrats, get tough
I expected my state senate candidate, Beverly Powell, to be slimmed down in ugly, dark photos and with ominous voiceovers, but I didn’t expect her to cry in the face of a sufficient opposition. (April 7, 8A, “Senator Powell explains why she ended her re-election bid”)
If you can’t craft a message that resonates with voters who are herded like sheep, why pretend to be a politician? Talk to those voters. Aren’t Texas Democrats fighting?

Why not go all the way?
While Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has signed a bill that makes abortion a crime, why isn’t there a bill making sex a crime? (April 13, 8A, “New Oklahoma law would send abortion doctors to jail”) Without the sexual act, there would be no unwanted pregnancies.

Tarrant County Voting Excellence
Congratulations to Heider Garcia on being recognized by the League of Women Voters Texas as an outstanding election administrator. Garcia was honored at the league’s state convention on April 8 in Austin. Dallas County’s Michael Scarpello, Collin County’s Bruce Sherbet and Harris County’s Isabel Longoria were also honored.
Garcia and the Tarrant County Office of Elections also received an outstanding ranking for the Office of Elections website. The Texas League reviews websites from all 254 counties in Texas and ranks them according to specific criteria. Exceptional is the highest rating that can be awarded, and Tarrant County has received this rating for the past few years.
Thank you to Garcia, his staff, and all election officials who make voting in Tarrant County safe, accessible, and accurate.

Engage young voters more
As a young college student, I can understand why voter turnout is so low throughout Texas. I’ve heard many excuses for not voting, such as “It doesn’t matter if I vote” or “I don’t know who to vote for, so why do it?
How to motivate young people like me? Texas needs to make it easier to register to vote with automatic registration when you get a driver’s license and needs to create more polling places so people can vote in a timely manner.
With growing communities in Texas, especially in Denton County, we need to ensure that everyone has the opportunity and ability to vote for the leaders of tomorrow.

Don’t talk about the subject
I was disappointed with the April 6 front page article “Lt. govt. Wants a Florida-Style ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill to Florida’s Parental Rights Bill. Nowhere does he mention the word “gay”. I’m amazed at how many people on the left think it’s okay for a teacher to talk about sex and sexuality to students in kindergarten through third grade. Why?
What people do in their personal lives is up to them, but discussing it with these kids this age in a school setting is outrageous. The fact that the schools did not think that parents should be aware of these kinds of discussions shows the influence of certain radical groups in our schools and the need for a parental rights bill.

Let’s talk about food safety first
Governor Greg Abbott’s ads say we should vote for him and cough up money so he can “secure our borders.” What security? It delays trucks from Mexico for 30 hours, while fruits and vegetables rot in line. Is this the governor we need?

Biden, world: don’t sit idly by
What will it take for the free world to decide that enough is enough when it comes to Russia’s murderous assault on humanity in Ukraine? Are not the rapes of young and old Ukrainian girls, the murders of innocent people enough? Has the free world lost its conscience? Even the United Nations has not set up a peacekeeping force to at least provide security for the International Committee of the Red Cross to deliver humanitarian aid.
President Joe Biden and NATO are apparently afraid of the possibility of nuclear war. But a nuclear war would totally wipe out Russia, and I don’t think Vladimir Putin is stupid enough to want that.
Putin will invade more countries until he brings back the former Soviet Union. The longer the United States and NATO wait, the more the rapes, murders and displacement of millions of people will continue.
