Austin FC announced on Wednesday that it had acquired teenage midfielder Sebastian Berhalter on loan from Columbus Crew, with his new club choosing to trade him at the end of next season.
Berhalter, who turns 20 in May, is the son of former Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter, currently the head coach of the United States Men’s National Team.
“Sebastian is a young and talented midfielder who will add depth to our growing squad,” Austin FC sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a statement. “We are delighted that he is joining the club and look forward to his continued professional development with Austin FC.”

In a video posted to his Twitter account, Berhalter said: “I am excited about this new opportunity and look forward to the challenge. I am excited to begin.
In his first professional action, Berhalter played nine games for the Crew league champion in 2020, including four starts. He had signed with Columbus as a local player in January 2020 after spending six seasons with the club’s academy team (2014-19). The London native played for the NCAA Blue Blood in North Carolina.
