The long-term career options for marketers may be getting broader, as organisations take an increasing interest in appointing them to boards as non-executive directors (NEDs).
While it is not unusual for senior marketers to have portfolio careers, which see them mixing NED positions with other roles, this route appears to be gaining in popularity. The motivations for choosing such a career path – also known by some as mosaic or plural working – are varied, but one thing does seem certain: companies looking for NEDs are increasingly seeking out the skillsets marketers possess.
